The market in Place aux Herbes: a wonderful atmosphere to enjoy with its Gard accent with a Provençal lilt
With 40% of the vote, the twice‐weekly market in Place aux Herbes won first place in the competition organised by Midi Libre and MyTF1. Voted the most beautiful market in the region, it will face off twenty‐three other selected regional markets as it attempts to win the title of “the most beautiful market in France”.
First called Place Royale and then Place Républicaine, the elegant Place aux Herbes hosts a market in the centre of the arched square twice a week. On Wednesdays, the alleys belong to local producers and farmers. Between Nîmes and the Cévennes foothills, you can find a mix of vegetables, fruits, cured meats, cheeses, olives, crafts and more. On Saturdays, it’s second‐hand goods and antiques. And in the summer, the market is very busy from early morning.
Since the Roman era, it has been a market that has defied the times. Under the sunny Gard sky, Uzès market has become a genuine institution for the great many faithful who come to fill their baskets with the local delicacies.
